Friday Feature is a series where I feature people who inspire me, or products that I find interesting. Today, we have the very talented and adorable April of Penguins Creative. She has the cutest Hobonichi and I am so in love with her little watercolour doodles! Be sure to check out her channel and blog.
Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you like to do when you’re not journaling?
My name is April, and I’m a Taiwanese kid that grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. I love exploring different countries, especially the colorful and expressive culture in Japan and South Korea. Many of their mainstream stationery trends have spread to Taiwan and I’m greatly influenced and inspired by them. If I’m not traveling in those countries, I’m probably exploring different parts of Taipei taking photos, painting in my art journal, and scouting out new cafes to sit and read.
What is your favourite journal and why?
My favorite journal is definitely from Hobonichi. I use a Hobonichi Techo Cousin, a Weeks, and an A6 English Planner. The journal where I express most of my creativity and doodling are in the A6 journal. It’s just the right size to write short paragraphs of daily diary, and it also has enough space for me to doodle and paint some highlights of the day. I love the Tomoe River paper and how it works wonderfully with paint and my fountain pens.
What is your favourite journaling accessory or stationery?
My favorite journaling stationery tools are my waterproof pigment ink pens (Microns, Uni-pin, Unchida). They come in various sizes and are prefect for drawing letterings and doodles. I actually did a video about them in my youtube channel.
What inspired you to start a blog or channel?
Since high school, I’ve been avid followers of many fun and exciting bloggers that dedicate their website to topics of their passion, and I’ve always wanted the same for myself.
What do you enjoy most about blogging or vlogging?
Having a blog and youtube channel dedicated to my hobby is super fun. My friends don’t share my craziness for stationery and journaling. Therefore, I’m really excited about the audience and the community that enjoys the same hobby as me, and I’m able to connect with them through blogging and vlogging.
Where would you like to go on a holiday?
Although I’ve been to Japan a few times already, it is definitely high on my list of ideal vacation spots. Japan is very photogenic, they have amazing food, and it is also stationery heaven for addicts like me.
What are your favourite stores (online or brick & mortar) to shop in?
In Taiwan we have dedicated stationery stores called ‘Jo-da’ and ‘Guang-nan’. They have rows and rows of pens, paper items, washi tapes, stickers, and every stationery item you can imagine. I also love digging through the occasional artisan’s markets in Taipei where aspiring artists and illustrators sell their arts and stationery items. If anyone is coming to Taiwan, give me a call and I can definitely arrange and plan a stationery trip for you.
If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
