Overview of the Filofax Patent Compact in Lemon

I purchased the Patent Compact as I wanted something lighter and slimmer than the Saffiano but still maintained in a personal size. I came across one at Kinokuniya (Malaysia) in the colour Lemon and thought it was just the perfect bright and happy shade.

The exterior is made with glossy PU (a synthetic material that looks like leather) and is held close by a simple tab. It measures at 190mm (height) by 130mm (width) and has a depth of 25mm without any extra inserts except the standard ones. It’s not too big and not too small in terms of size.

The interior of the front cover consists of a flap pocket and two card slots (55mm across). The elastic pen loop is stitched on the front. The back cover has a simple vertical slot. It is lined with a beige polyester material, which compliments the bright yellow quite well. The rings are 15mm in diameter and the standard inserts fit just nicely.

Mine came with the 2015 week-on-two-pages (WO2P) inserts and a few remaining months in 2014. It has several loose leaf pages for tracking expenditure, notes, addresses and to-dos. It also has a few pages on national holidays around a few countries and a basic information page. It has 6 numbered dividers on rather thin paper material and has a standard “today” ruler.

While I really like its bright and extremely cheerful colour, the patent PU material does not clean very easily. I managed to get a couple of ink stains on it and they will not come off. I’ve tried rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover and a plain old damp cloth, but the stains are there to stay. It may not be a good option for those who are fastidious about keeping their diaries in a pristine condition.

The Filofax Patent Compact comes in three pretty spring shades; Duck Egg Blue, Lavender and Lemon. I think it’s great for those who love bright colours and are just starting out with a Filofax. I do enjoy using mine but it will remain at home most of the time because I don’t think it can take a lot of abuse. Due to the smaller ring size, I can’t squeeze too much in as the tab won’t close and it can only fit one pen.

Do you have a Patent Compact and how do you like yours? If you don’t have one, would you consider getting it? Do share your thoughts as I’d love to hear them.

You know I’ve really been considering getting a compact size Filofax for university. I’ve never actually had a good look at one but I love the idea of slimming everything down and carrying a less bulky planner which I think is something I would love.

The compact is a good size especially if you are thinking of reducing some of the bulk. I would recommend checking them out if you get the opportunity.

Hello! Coincidentally I’ve been thinking about trying a filofax again! I used to have one but it was so heavy I ended up not toting it about as I should and eventually fell out of the habit. Kept everything in my head and then on my phone but there’s nothing quite like writing something down to remember it. Are these new ones as heavy?

Hey PB, The personal sized ones are not as heavy or bulky as the A5, which is probably the Filofax we were used to in um, our younger days. They also have pocket sizes, which is smaller than personal. These are the 3 generic sizes that are available in our local market and it’s easier to find inserts for them. Actually, there are thinner, lighter and cheaper options available other than Filofax. I’d recommend checking out Kinokuniya. Quite a few planner options available there. And the SA told me that they are bringing in more of the 2015 Filofaxes if that’s what you’re interested in.
